The Massachusetts Department of Public Health department requires that the beach water be tested for bacteria during the summer swimming season. The water quality at Nahant Beach is very good.
Unfortunately, the water quality at Kings Beach in Lynn is poor. Sewage from Swampscott and Lynn empties onto the beach from two large outfall pipes. STAY OUT OF THIS WATER. It is highly polluted. It is also advisable to stay out of the beach water in this area.

The algae that are found on our beaches are naturally occurring and not harmful. It has been documented for over 100 years. At high amounts, it can be unsightly and emit an odor when decomposing. We actively work with DCR to remove it from the beach during the beach season.
